When you start involving employees in your safety program they become more engaged, energized and excited about safety. The idea is not just to involve them in a mandatory way, but to make them WANT to be involved. Safety is not a necessary evil. Your employees can and should be excited about safety. That’s why we are talking about employee engagement strategies in today’s episode.
So, how do you get employees involved in your safety program?
You have to start by getting them engaged in your workplace. Engagement comes down to a positive relationship between the employee and employer. An engaged employee helps to improve the workplace because they are loyal to their employer and want to do what’s best for the company.
Step 1: Engagement
Engagement starts with positive relationships. You can’t expect someone to help you or improve your program if you don’t have a relationship with them. Get to know them on a personal level.
Step 2: Team Building
Get them to work with management on a project together involving a problem that employees have identified. Ideally, you are making their lives easier by doing so.
Step 3: Appreciation
In order to have engaged employees, you must appreciate them. When you make them feel seen and listened to they will be more engaged in your workplace.
Once you’ve done all of these things, you will be ready to ask them to be involved in your safety program – and they will be excited to say yes and be on your team. And we all know that the more people involved in safety, the better the safety culture will be.
Engagement starts with positive relationships. Consider your current safety culture. Do you spend time at the lunch table with your employees? Are you listening to their needs? Are you offering encouragement and letting them know you appreciate them?
